OLé Women’s Falls Late, takes runner up in FCS
LANSING, Mich. — For nearly the entire afternoon, OLé Futsal Club executed its game plan to perfection.
Undermanned and facing the top team in the league, OLé defended with discipline, limited space, and carried a 1–0 lead deep into the second half of the Futsal Champions Series final.
What followed was a late swing that ultimately decided the match.
Chicago House scored three times in the second half, overturning the deficit and handing OLé a 3–1 defeat at Lansing City Arena.
The final score reflected the outcome, but not the balance of the contest.
OLé entered the match without four key players due to injury, forcing adjustments in both rotation and approach. Against a Chicago side that had gone unbeaten in the regular season, the margin for error was always going to be narrow.
From the opening whistle, OLé leaned into a compact, disciplined defensive structure.
The approach worked.
Chicago controlled possession and generated volume — finishing with 75 shots to OLé’s 16 — but struggled to break through cleanly for long stretches.
OLé, meanwhile, remained efficient.
Medina Hindic provided the breakthrough, finishing one of the team’s limited opportunities to give OLé a 1–0 lead — a scoreline they held for the majority of the match.
Behind that lead was a collective defensive effort anchored by goalkeeper Kaylee Sarnicola, who recorded eight saves and helped organize a back line that absorbed sustained pressure without breaking.
For long stretches, OLé dictated the terms of the game without the ball.
The turning point came late.
As the physical toll of a shortened rotation began to show, Chicago’s persistence finally broke through. A late equalizer shifted momentum, and two additional goals in quick succession sealed the result.
Despite the final stretch, OLé’s defensive execution for much of the match underscored the team’s adaptability and tactical discipline, particularly given the circumstances.
The performance also reflected a season that established OLé as one of the top sides in the FCS.
During the regular season, OLé finished second in the standings, combining attacking quality with defensive consistency to secure a playoff berth and advance to the final.
Individually, the campaign was highlighted by the presence of U.S. Futsal National Team player Citlali Luna, whose influence extended beyond scoring and into the team’s overall rhythm and structure.
Alongside her, a younger core continued to emerge.
Sarnicola’s performance in goal throughout the season — and again in the final — provided stability under pressure, while Sasha Kelly’s versatility and defensive work rate played a key role in balancing the team across multiple phases of play.
Saturday’s result will be remembered as a missed opportunity, but the broader picture offers a different perspective.
Shorthanded. Facing the league’s top team. Leading late.
OLé showed it could compete — and control — a championship match under difficult conditions.
The outcome may not have followed, but the foundation is clear.
And it is one that suggests this group will not be far from this stage again.
